Suggested Learning Activities 3rd class

Suggested Activities for all Junior Room Classes (15th - 19th of June)

15th- 19th June 2020

Junior Infants- 3rd Class

Hi everyone,

So, we are coming to the last two weeks of the school year. I, for one, can’t believe how fast the last few months have flown by, but it feels like a lifetime ago since I’ve seen all the kids! I know that everyone has put in a great effort whilst learning at home and I know it can’t have been easy for children and parents alike.

This week I have set a “Sports Day” theme. Although there will be no written work- most of the activities will incorporate some of the subjects that children learn at school. I hope that you all enjoy and feel free to make up your own unique activities. Bernie

Activity 1:

Children (and parents) can compete in the traditional egg/potato and spoon race.  (Balance- P.E)

Activity 2:

Children (and parents) can compete in the traditional three-legged race.

Activity 3:

Children (and parents) can compete in the traditional sack race.

  • Children can make their own rosettes for the winners using the following template. (Ordinal Numbers- maths)

All of the above activities can be altered- to make them easier/harder. Maybe set up and obstacle course that you have to go around whilst holding the egg/potato and spoon, in the sack or in your pairs in the three-legged race.

Activity 4:

Decorate your potato/egg. Why not stick some googly eyes/pom-poms/string/glitter on them? (Construction- Art)

Activity 5:

Jigsaw Race. Lay out your garden as follows. Place a string/rope down (this is the start line)- take around 4/5 giant steps forward and scatter the pieces of the jigsaw on the ground. Starting at the start line- run and pick up 1 piece of the jigsaw at a time. when all pieces are back behind the start line- build the jigsaw. This can be altered- by seeing how long it takes to complete the course, having the jigsaw pieces’ upside down etc. (Time- Maths, Fine Motor Skills)

Activity 6:

Treasure Hunt. Here are a few ideas of clues for a treasure hunt around your home. These can be hand-written or printed out. (Literacy- Reading/Comprehension Skills)

  1. (give to your child)

You can find me where your spoons, knives and forks live.

  1. (hide in the cutlery drawer).

I am used to dry your hands in the bathroom.

  1. (hide under your bathroom towel).

To keep the house clean you throw rubbish in me.

  1. (hide at the bin).

You sleep in me at night.

  1. (hide in the bed).

When your clothes are dirty- I clean them.

  1. (hide in the washing machine).

I keep you entertained with cartoons, films and children’s programmes.

  1. (hide beside the T.V.)

You use me first thing in the morning and last thing at night, I help to keep your teeth clean.

  1. (hide beside toothbrush)

When visitors come, you welcome them here.

  1. (hide at the front door)

I keep your food and drink cold

  1. (hide the treat in the fridge) **Treat**

  • Older children can make up their own “Outdoor Treasure Hunt” for parents and siblings.

  • Using coffee/tea stained paper children can make a map of their treasure hunt. It is super effective if an adult burn around the edges.

Activity 7:

Freeze Dance Rhyme Dance: Crank the tunes and let the dancing begin. Unlike the regular game of “musical statues”, when the music stops, a designated person shouts out a word. If the other dancer(s) can’t respond with a word to rhyme with it within a time (1-5/10), that person is out.  (Literacy- Rhyming)

Activity 8:

Word Tennis: This is a word association game. All you need is two rackets. Children pretend to hit the words over and back. Pick a topic for example animals- take turns naming an animal. The first person to repeat a word/ not answer is out. Here are a few ideas- animals, numbers, colours, clothes, sports, boy names, girl names, food, drink and vehicles. Older children may be able to do place names, cars, nouns, verbs, adjectives, multiples of numbers, odd numbers, even numbers etc. (Literacy, Maths, Geography, Science, P.E.)

Activity 9:

Lights, Camera, Action! No doubt children have been reading, been read to, or have watched films during lockdown. Why not have the kids re-enact the stories and record it on their tablets. Homemade props and costumes will make the activity extra fun! (Drama, History- retelling the story)

Activity 10:

Scavenger Hunt:

Outdoor Scavenger Hunt- Put a tick beside the ones that you find.

a leaf

something smooth

something square

a ladybug

something rough

something rectangular

a flower

something tall

something circular

a wasp/bee

something small

something rectangular

a wheelie bin

something red

a cube

a gate

something green

a cuboid

a dog

something yellow

a sphere

a cat

something that smells

something that holds water

These are only but a few ideas. Please feel free to make them your own Please take plenty of photos- these can be added to your/your child’s wee Covid Diary, Please feel free to email me if you need any help - berniemceleney@outlook.com

A note from Miss Long for 3rd Class Pupils.

Hi Third Class! I hope you are all well. I can’t believe this would have been our last full week in school! I am so proud of you all and I had a great year teaching you. If we were still in school now, we would be having sports day and going on our tour so this week’s work is going to be very active and fun

Challenge Time! – for this you will need yourself, a ball and a stopwatch/timer. Complete the following challenges:

  1. How many times can you throw a ball above your head, clap and catch it in one minute? Use this number to work out how many times you could do it in 3 minutes (clue- use multiplication). For an extra challenge here, use a smaller ball.

  2. How long does it take you to bounce a ball and catch it 20 times?

  3. This challenge has 3 parts- how long does it take you to do 10 High Knee marches, 5 Jumping Jacks and 1 run around your house?

Times tables- revise x10 this week. I have attached a game for your tables (I know I promised you all a game once we had finished all the tables in school). If you don’t have dice at home, you can make your own using an old box. The instructions say two players but you can do this on your own as well. You can see how long it takes you to get four in a row.

Missing you all!

From Miss Long.

Maths: (A note from Miss Long)

Hi everyone.

Hope you are all well. We only have another few weeks left in this school year! Keep up the fantastic work you have been doing. If something is confusing you or if you need some extra help, please let me know.

Time tables- Revision of x9. Practise your skip counting, play ‘Hit the Button’ on Topmarks, use the multiplication wheel, etc. Remember that by spending a little bit of time on learning and practising your tables every week you will find them so much easier when you go into 4 th Class.

Planet Maths- This week we are looking at Area. Area is how much space a surface takes up. In your book you will be measuring the area of various surfaces and shapes using squares. You could look at the area of things around your house- for example if you had tiles on your kitchen floor, you could estimate and count these to find out the area of that floor. You don’t have to do all the activities; you can choose 4 or 5 sections to do for the week.

Using the KWL chart and your research make a small display/project about volcanoes. It is up to you how you do it. (PowerPoint, a chart, a booklet or an A4 page)- include a labelled diagram of a volcano, your KWL chart and other information that you have gathered. Below are some example headings that could be used.

  • Diagram of a volcano

  • The 3 Types of Volcanoes

  • My experiment

  • My KWL Chart

  • Information- The biggest volcano in the world, the smallest volcano in the world, which volcano erupted most recent etc.

Maths: (A note from Miss Long)

Hi everyone!

I hope that you are all happy and well. This week we will be looking at weight. This is one that you can easily do at home. Find things that are less than 1kg, about 1kg or more than 1kg, and use your estimation skills before checking the weights of these items. You can look at things in your kitchen and check the weights, like a cereal box, a jar of jam, packet of spaghetti, etc.

Important facts to know about weight: There are 1000g in 1kg, there are 500g in ½ kg, there are 250g in ¼ kg and there are 750g in ¾ kg.

Adding and subtracting weights- When we are adding and subtracting weights, we will be using hundreds, tens and units, just like you did earlier this year.

Some questions will have kg, but you will still add or subtract the exact same way as you have done before, but now you just have an extra column at the end to add or subtract. Take your time with these and remember to always start with the ‘units’ first. I have done some examples of these and have sent them to Mrs McEleney if you need some help. I have sent her the pages from the Planet Maths book as well and you can do whichever activities you want. You can email me on the school email if you want extra help for these.

Times tables- going back over x5 (use skip counting, Topmarks, songs, etc.). This is a good week to have a look at the clock and practise time while you are doing your 5x tables, as we know that each number on the clock shows 5 minutes- 5 past, 10 past, etc.

Miss Long

Science/Geography:

We would be looking at volcanoes again this week. Please do out a KWL chart about volcanoes. Follow the template below. You can send these to me and I will help put together the answers for your questions. Please find links attached that may help answer some of your questions.

What I already Know about Volcanoes

What I Want to learn about Volcanoes

At the end what I have Learned about Volcanoes.

*You can do these in bullet points and keep them short and brief.

**You can ask questions in this section- asking what you want to know about.

***Keep this KWL chart and by the end- hopefully we should know everything we want to about Volcanoes.

Activity/ Research: Look up different types of volcanoes- active, dormant, extinct. Name one of each.

Exercise: - keep a diary of different physical activity eg. Cycling, go-karting, hula hooping, trampolining, playing football, basketball, running, jumping etc.

Incorporate some maths into PE- how many times can you bounce a ball in a minute? How many jumping jacks can be done in a minute? Count how many times you can jump- with a skipping rope etc.

Make up a few challenges of your own- and maybe share them with your friends to compare

Dark: We can make things dark by cancelling out the light. Think about how night happens. The sun sets/disappears (cancelling out the light) and it becomes night (dark). How could I make inside my house dark during the day?

Activity: Nocturnal animals are animals that sleep during the day and stay awake at night! Can you think of any? Draw a few nocturnal animals and write their names.

Maths from Ms. Long for 27th of April - 1st of May

Hi everyone!

This week is Active (Schools) Home Week so we can link Maths to PE this week! We are still working on time like last week and this can be done outdoors if the weather is nice. You can draw a clock on the ground with chalk and use any two items to show the hands, such as sticks. Another fun activity is using a hula hoop and labelling it like a clock, then use your hands to show the time. See the picture below for this, it is from Teacher Julieanne’s website. From Ms. Long.

Can you guess how long a minute is? Ask someone to start a stopwatch and when you think a minute has passed let them know and see how close you were! Here are some fun activities to do in a minute:

How many times can you skip in a minute?

How many times can you bounce a ball in a minute?

How many times can you solo a ball in a minute?

You can record your results from these, and you can think of your own challenges too!

3rd Class Work - 20th - 24th April

3rd Class Work-

20th – 24th April

Hi 3rd Class,

Hope you all had a lovely Easter and are enjoying this beautiful weather. I have attached a few more pieces of work for the week ahead. Please do not worry about getting all/any of it done. As I said before the main thing is to stay safe and happy. I have set up a new email address that you can email any completed work to or indeed if you have any queries or concerns at this time (berniemceleney@outlook.com). I will check this regularly and try to get back to you as soon as possible. I am really missing you all and can’t wait to see you when this has all settled down. I am aware that some of you may not have access to a printer or a good internet connection so make the most of anything you have at home. Maths/English/Science are everywhere.

English:

Treasury: Unit 9 “The Sun” pg 54-57

Reading- Get Set- “Deserts in Africa”. Exercise- pg 187 D- one word, pg 187 E. Study the meaning of the words here before reading data.cjfallon.ie/resources/wonderland/stages3and4/S3_B1_C16_F1.html

Writing- Using pg 58/59 in Treasury- do a report on the “Deserts of Africa”.

You can use some of the following headings or chose your own. Be sure to draw pictures.

  • Climate in the Desert - Plants and Animals in the Desert

  • Water in the Desert - People in the Desert

Spellings: Continue working on spellbound (1 unit a week) Unit 26 (pg54/55)

Grammar: -     A verb is an action/doing word. Look at E on pg 187. Underline the verbs in this passage and make a list in your copy. Change these into the past tense of the verb to make the passage about the past.

Remember- “is” and “are” are part of the verb “to be”. Most words change to the past tense by adding “ed” to the end, others change completely like “is” to “was”. Try your best

Science:

Light: During science week we looked at light and dark. We looked at our reflections in the mirror.  We made silhouettes of each other and hung them up in the school. A silhouette like a reflection- but it blocks out the light. This week we will look at refraction. Watch the video and find out what it means. https://jr.brainpop.com/science/energy/light/. You can also complete some of the activities beneath the video.

Task: Draw two arrows – one above the other.  Then pour water into a glass. Move the arrows up and down behind the glass. What happens? Find some more activities that show refraction. Feel free to video them and send them on

Geography:

“Global Earth Day” is Wednesday 22nd April. We had been talking about recycling at school and I can’t wait to see some of the art you made before Easter. Maybe this week, you could help save the planet around the house, some examples include: sorting the recycling, switching off lights, conserving water when washing their teeth, helping with a spring clean etc. I would love to hear any other ideas that you come up with.

These are only some suggestions, please do not feel under any pressure to do all of the above. Children work at different paces and have different concentration spans. Your child’s safety and happiness is priority at this very uncertain time. Please do not hesitate to contact the school on scoilcholmcille@hotmail.com or via the school website contact page. Please also keep an eye on the padlets as more resources will be added.

I hope everyone is keeping well and hopefully I will see you all in the not so distant future.
